Not wanting to be left out of the retro-heritage craze, Rado men’s replica watches have jumped into the fray by reaching back into their archives to present a reinterpretation of a scarce and lesser known 1960s diver–the Captain Cook. Now, 37mm for a diver back in the day was quite common, but today it’s almost unheard of. The size definitely gives this watch a vintage feel and a wearability missing from so many of today’s behemoths. The stainless steel case has clean straight lugs and a polished finish, with an engraved three-seahorse logo on the back. The crown does not screw down, so the watch features a water resistance of only 100m.

Smaller sizing aside, the watch really is a stunner. It features a warm gray dial with a sunburst finish and painted luminous hour markers. These are very much like the original, as is the distinctive handset with the broad-arrow hour hand. Rounding out the dial is the trademark Rado anchor logo which is inset into the dial below the twelve, with the anchor rotating freely depending on which way the watch is oriented. It comes with a box-shaped sapphire crystal and a really sharp black ceramic bezel insert. I cannot overstate how nice the insert is, and it even features a font that is extremely close to the original.

Rado has always made durability its forte and has gone beyond the call of duty to develop superior materials that are resilient yet attractive and lightweight. The beefy 46 x 45.5 x 13.7mm case of the titanium model not only offers an extraordinary resilience to scratches – thanks to a treatment at a structural level to increase its hardness – it weighs in at just 106 grams, far less than you would expect from a watch this big.
Like its predecessor the Cape Horn, the new Rado HyperChrome 1616 comes in a pronounced cushion-shaped case but has upped the diameter by 10mm and features crown protectors to add an air of even greater solidity to the watch. The original synthetic Hesalite crystal covering the dial has been replaced with sapphire crystal while still respecting the slightly domed shape in keeping with the vintage spirit of this model.
The dial is faithful to the original Rado copy watches with a look that cannot hide the age of its conception. The hands and the yellow golden-colored faceted indices, along with the minutes and seconds tracks, are so much a product of the early 1970s that if this were a minute repeater Westminster carillon, it would play the opening bars of a Led Zeppelin song.

Let’s take a look to see how he has been able to give it his interpretation.
The Rado Ceramica series replica watch is known for being a modernist piece. Rado produced quite a bit of fanfare when the original was released due to the use of their patented plasma high-tech ceramic. Rado has a history of using unique materials for their casings, though, and had previously used cermet, a titanium-ceramic alloy, in the Sintra. The ceramic was smoother and shinier, for sure, and anyone who owns or has handled one knows what I’m talking about. Grcic’s work as an industrial designer has led him into the realms of furniture with Magis and Mattiazai, while some of his work is on display at the Museum of Modern Art. His designs are clean and functional but not overly embellished. The Rado Ceramica seems like a good starting point for his foray into horology.

Grcic worked with Rado to produce four pieces in this collection: two men’s watches and two for women. The men’s line features Ref. 256.0706.3.016 and Ref. 212.0708.3.015 which they call the “Signature Model.” Each piece measures 30.0 x 41.7 x 7.6 and both models exhibit a more subdued matte black monobloc case with a PVD-coated caseback crafted from titanium. The “Signature Model” also varies in that it showcases a custom numbered engraving out of 701 pieces. Each piece is rated for a 50-meter water resistance and houses a curved sapphire crystal.
The Ref.16 features a square minute-track with a small seconds subdial at 6 o’clock, while the “Signature Model” sticks with a circular 3-6-9 motif, both on a deep black lacquered backdrop. Both models receive a helping of Super-LumiNova Rado luminous copy watches to throw some light in the darkness as well. The “Signature Model” may be a little cleaner but for those of you that prefer square watch faces on square watches… the choice is clear. Not pointing any fingers!
